On September 16th 1933 a category 4 Hurricane pasted just off shore of the North Carolina Coast. As the Storm Surge receded it formed what is now known as Barden’s Inlet or “The Drain”, which did not exist prior to the Storm. Initially, the newly formed inlet was shallow, then in 1938 money was made available through the efforts of NC Representative Graham Barden to dredge the inlet to a depth of 9 feet. Today Barden’s Inlet / The Drain & leading back towards Harkers Island is marked with Dayboards and Buoys, and is navigable for most small boats; however if you’re not familiar with the area a little local knowledge will be helpful as the main channel is narrow in places, with lots of twist, turns, and shoals to maneuver around.
